Summer Without Limits: Teen Summer Camp

What do most of us think about when we enter the summer months? Time off, warmer weather and fun summer activities like CAMP!
At Leader Dogs for the Blind, we offer high school-aged students a unique opportunity to have an unforgettable summer camp experience.
Each year, teens from all over the United States come to the Leader Dog campus in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and stay for a week of learning, growth and fun. But this isn’t just any camp – it’s a place where young people who are blind or visually impaired can gain independence, confidence and life-changing skills.
Each day of camp is packed full of engaging activities that provide a well-rounded and empowering experience. We travel to Lions Bear Lake camp, where campers push their limits and build confidence through exciting outdoor challenges like rock climbing, ziplining and kayaking.
Back on campus, campers explore accessible GPS technology. They put those skills to the test in various settings – including an adventure to the Detroit Zoo, where they apply their skills in a real-world setting.
Campers also get hands-on experience learning and working with guide dogs and guide dog mobility instructors. This one-of-a-kind opportunity allows them to explore guide dog travel as a future mobility option in a safe, supportive and educational environment. This may come as a shock – this tends to be the camper’s favorite part!
Throughout the week campers also experience:
- Team building and leadership exercises
- Going to the movies WITH accessible headset for audio descriptions
- Outdoor adventures
- Talent show and dance
Best of all, they build lasting friendships and memories while discovering what is possible for their future.
As instructors, camp allows us the opportunity to facilitate these life changing experiences and create the most supportive atmosphere.
Transportation, accommodation and meals are all provided for FREE thanks to our wonderful donors.
Summer at Leader Dog is more than just fun – it’s empowering. It’s freedom. It’s a week that can change a life.
