June 2025 – Future Leader Dog Gram Update

It’s time for another update about Future Leader Dog Gram! He’s being raised and supported by six team members at Leader Dogs for the Blind. Emily is a part of the team and wants to share some of the exciting progress and experiences her and Gram have had together in the last month.

What a whirlwind this has been! It has been so rewarding to celebrate Gram’s birthday and reflect on the past year as his puppy raiser. I had the pleasure of taking Gram on an outing to the Rochester Farmer’s Market. He’s not only a great companion, but he knows when he’s training and is so attentive in his vest. He focuses well to his cues and stays aware of his surroundings.

As a first-time puppy raiser, I am so honored to see the growth he has made through this past year. He has come into his own as a responsible dog, and I know our guide dog mobility instructors are going to support him as he goes into formal training. I keep joking with people that Gram is “going to college” this August, and it is such a bittersweet feeling.

I know I’ll miss him being around, but after seeing him work in puppy class and at outings, I have such confidence in his ability to continue his training and one day guide someone who is blind or low vision. I know he is ready to start the next step in his journey toward becoming a Leader Dog, and I can’t wait to see him reach his full potential!

Best,
